How to choose the right meter over box

Over boxes fail on fit far more often than on performance. Because they go over something that already exists and cannot move, measuring is the whole job.

Measure the meter, then measure the clearance

Measure the meter, pipework, valves and anything projecting from the front, then allow enough clearance for the door to close properly. Depth is especially important where pipework sits in front of the meter.

What fire period is required?

Meters in communal hallways, lobbies or escape routes may require a fire-rated enclosure. Check the building’s fire strategy and required fire period before ordering.

Gas, electric, or both?

Gas and electric meters have different ventilation, clearance and access requirements. If both are housed together, confirm whether a combined enclosure is suitable or separate boxes are required.

Locking and supplier access

Choose a locking system that prevents unauthorised access while still allowing utility suppliers to access the meter. Confirm the required lock type with the relevant utility provider before installation.

Access for reading and emergency isolation

The enclosure must allow the meter to be read and the supply to be isolated when required. Check the door swing, valve access and surrounding space to ensure the box does not obstruct the escape route.
